Yana came across yoga for the first time in her late teens. Her love for the practice grew each day and changed her life completely.  To deepen her practice, she completed her first teacher training in Toronto in 2013.  Upon graduation from her University studies, she embarked on an unforgettable journey to India.  She spent a total of 6 months in little villages in the Himalayan ranges of India completing another teacher training and several yoga training certificates.  Yana is trained in Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga and Yin.  Yoga is her absolute passion and her mission is to spread the love for it with everyone she meets, as well as help inspire her students to live a happier, healthier and more positive life.


Fertility Acupuncture

If you and your partner are struggling to have a baby, you’re not alone. Fertility issues affect 11.5-15.7% of couples in Canada ( Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after frequent, unprotected sexual intercourse for at least one year.

Western medicine is effective in measuring all the events around fertility. From the thickness of the endometrial lining to the maturation of each ovarian follicle. Western medicine also prescribes hormones that can boost any deficiency and increase chances of fertility.

Western treatments are often invasive and medicalized.  Over time, with daily blood work and monthly angst, the couple can experience increasing anxiety and stress, associated with high cortisol levels and a ‘fight or flight’ response.

Chinese medicine is effective at increasing fertility in the following ways. Acupuncture treatments can be used to complement the western medicine approach.

  • Regular acupuncture treatments can reduce stress. Acupuncture has been shown decrease cortisol levels in the blood. This, among other effects, can promote sleep, improve digestion and result in a relaxed state. This not only puts your mind more at ease and makes life more enjoyable, but it also increases the chances of conception.
  • Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the uterus and increase the uterine endometrial lining.  This effect increases the chances of implantation.
  • Irregular periods or a lack of menstruation can be a source of infertility. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a condition of hormone imbalance, is also a common cause of infertility. Acupuncture can regulate hormones levels to ensure ideal balance of the hormonal cascade each menstrual cycle. The goal is to have regular menstrual cycles with mild PMS symptoms.
  • Acupuncture attempts to address the root cause of infertility – Is there too much heat, or too much cold? Is there a state of excess or deficiency?

What to expect?

Laura tailors each treatment to the patient. First, she will discuss your current and past health history with you. Next, she comes up with a Chinese Medicine diagnosis based on your unique set of symptoms.  Your acupuncture treatment may include acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, guasha (scraping), tuina massage and/or moxibustion. Ideally you would come for at least two treatments per month, one treatment before ovulation and then one after ovulation. Acupuncture around the time of IUI (intrauterine insemination) and IVF (in vitro fertilization) can also be helpful.

Stephen received his B.A. (Hons) in Kinesiology from York University. He then attended the Michener Institute of Applied Health Sciences and received his diploma in chiropody. Stephen presently owns and operates three other foot clinics in Scarborough, North York and Bradford.

Stephen specializes foot care for patients with diabetes.  Due to poor circulation and reduced kidney function, diabetics have a hard time fighting infection and heal very slowly from cuts, sores and wounds. Infections can cause serious complications that, if left untreated, may result in severe problems.  Poor circulation slows down healing even further. And since poor blood circulation most seriously affects the parts of the body that are farthest from the heart, feet are prone to issues. Diabetes can also damage nerves, stiffen joints, cause foot ulcers and a host of other health problems.

Differences between Yin and Restorative Yoga

Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga can often sound like the same thing.  It’s understandable, since there are so many similarities.  Both practices actually restore the nervous system and promote deep relaxation through breathing, which activates the body’s healing process.

The biggest barrier from people is that students feel like they’re not really doing anything, compare to active forms of exercise, such as Vinyasa or Ashtanga yoga.  In fact, the action of staying still is just as beneficial as exercise.  Since stress is a prime indicator for a slew of common illnesses, including irritable bowel syndrome, multiple sclerosis, heart disease and even cancer, we need to slow things down now more than ever.

The differences between Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga

Yin Yoga

It takes many a few times to really warm up to and even understand Yin Yoga which was initially called “Daoist” yoga. This style of yoga targets the deep connective tissues of the body vs. the superficial tissues, and the fascia that covers the body.  The aim is to increase flexibility and encourage a feeling of release and letting go.  It is a wonderful way to learn the basics of meditation and stilling the mind.  As such, it is ideal for athletic types who need to release tension in overworked joints, and it is also good for those who are stiff.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga is all about healing the mind and body through simple poses. Poses are often held for as long as 10 minutes, with the help of props such as bolsters, blocks, blankets and straps. It is similar to Yin yoga, but with less emphasis on flexibility and more on relaxing.
