Yoga is a Sanskrit word that means “to yoke” or “to unite”. As a practice, it is a scientific system for achieving total health, mental, and spiritual well-being — a means to unite the body, mind, and spirit.
Can beginners attend classes at Tempo Yoga?
Absolutely, we all start somewhere. We welcome you as you are, providing a space that nurtures and supports you on your yoga journey.
I’m not flexible, can I do yoga?
You don’t need to be good at something in order to try it, life works in the exact opposite way. People come to yoga because they aren’t as strong/ flexible as they would like to be. There’s a reason why we refer yoga as a practice, it is something that needs to be continually improved upon, continually worked on.
What should I bring?
An open mind and a positive attitude. Our studio is fully equipped with props. Mats and towels are available for rent for $2/each. If you prefer to use your own props, feel free to bring them along. Bottle water is available for sale and filtered water to refill your water bottle for free.
What should I wear?
Breathable, comfortable clothing that is not overly baggy so your instructors can see your form.
Can I arrive late/ leave early?
Please try to arrive early and leave on time. Arriving late is distracting for the teacher and the other students. Leaving early is especially disturbing when others are in Savasana (relaxation pose). Each class is taught as a sequence of poses gradually building in intensity. The beginning and the end are important components of the class. If you must leave early, let the teacher know before the class begins.
Can women practice yoga during their menstrual cycle?
All women are different. Some may not have any side effects, low energy or feel at all different than they do during the rest of the month, while others may experience extreme pain, mood swings, fatigue, bloating and irritability. Because no woman is the same, therefore there’s no rules regarding what to practice during menstruation. Some instructors may suggest female students to avoid inverted postures. However, this is a very individual decision.
Why is the room so warm?
A heated room helps aid our muscles and joints, preparing them for our practice. We want to build heat in the body, riding ourselves of anythign that does not serve us. We are detoxifying the body.
How often should I practice yoga?
Ideally, yoga is meant to be a daily practice. As that is quite overwhelming to a beginner, we recommend you set a goal you can realistically keep. Consistency is the key. The more you practice, the better you will feel and the more you will want to practice.
Why do we chant “OM”?
Om is a mantra or vibration, it is considered to have high spiritual and creative power but despite this, it is a mantra that can be recited by anyone. Everything in the universe is pulsating and vibrating – nothing is really standing still. The sound Om, when chanted, vibrates at the frequency of 432 Hz, which is the same vibration frequency found throughout everything in nature.
